Volunteering Abroad Versus Donating To Charity

Donating, whether through giving money or items or donating one’s time and effort, is important to the functioning of most nonprofit organizations. Making the decision between volunteering abroad and donating to a cause can be tough, and there are many aspects to consider. Both have positive attributes, while also having constraints.

Consider the following when deciding between volunteering abroad and donating:

Time

How much time do you have available? If you are considering volunteering for an organization, be sure to check how much time you can block off for volunteering—including travel time as well. Because many organizations require volunteers to stay for the long term, you may find that you have scheduling conflicts. If you are passionate about a cause or organization, but cannot find the time to volunteer, donating may be the best option for you!

Money

It sounds simple, but it’s worth noting: considering monetary costs is one of the most important aspects of making the decision. If you have chosen an organization and can afford both the travel expenses and volunteer fees, volunteering abroad may be a perfect option. However, if you are unable to secure enough funding, especially if travel expenses prove too challenging, then donating to the organization may be simpler.

On another note: be sure to check out how much donation money is actually used in the hands-on, direct assistance your organization provides. If much of the donation money is funneled into administrative costs, it may be best to choose another organization, or better yet, find a low-cost program where you can volunteer yourself, whether local or abroad.

Comfort

Let’s face it, not all of us with humanistic intentions are cut out for volunteering abroad. While there is nothing wrong with introversion or with having legitimate concerns about safety, it does prevent some from being able to realize our full potential as volunteers. If you are not comfortable volunteering abroad, donating to an organization that assists your cause is a fantastic way of providing your support.

Sense of Accomplishment

For some, altruism can be accomplished through donating money to a cause that is responsible, legitimate, and provides a service to humanity. However, for some, donating money does not provide the same sense of accomplishment. If you are the type of person that enjoys hands-on, hard work with people that have different perspectives, cultures, and diverse lifestyles, volunteering abroad is right for you. Making friendships and doing your part to serve humankind is one of the most rewarding things you can ever experience, so if you have the opportunity and resources, go out and do it!

Physical Capabilities

Some organizations require their volunteers to be in top physical shape, especially if you are volunteering for projects such as construction, farming, or if you are living in an area that requires a great deal of walking or is located in high altitude. Organizations recognize that your health is of the utmost importance; therefore, it may be wise to donate to organizations that do the bulk of their work in places that require top physical fitness.

Personal Desires

For some, travelling is one of the best externalities of volunteering abroad. If you are someone who has the financial resources and time to volunteer for an organization abroad, then you have great opportunities to travel more and act also as a tourist in your host country or surrounding area.

When deciding whether to volunteer abroad or donate to an organization, the most important things to remember are the fundamental reasons you have chosen to donate either your time or money. If you are hoping to make a personal impact on the lives of others, volunteering abroad is right for you. If you are limited on resources or uncomfortable abroad, donating is right for you. By choosing to do either, you are making a great leap for humanity.

Good luck on making your decision!
