We Are All Just People: An Organization Dedicated To Providing A Human Quality To Holiday Assistance

November 29, 2012

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.—Albert Pike

According to a Census Bureau report in September, over 46 million Americans are impoverished. While this number represents a much smaller percentage of the total impoverished population compared to other countries around the world, poverty in the U.S. exists and the realization is often striking. While living conditions are quite different from some of the most remote parts of the world, poverty at home should not be ignored. No family should have to choose between providing dinner and winter clothing for their children. We Are All Just People - Volunteer Global

With the holidays fast approaching, charities and nonprofit organizations frequently become more visible—Santas ringing bells in front of Wal-Mart and Giving Trees at banks and religious organizations with names of needy children become frequent. While these are undoubtedly selfless, commendable ways of providing for families in need during what is perhaps the most difficult and dreaded time of year, oftentimes they do not provide the human quality that those who are in need truly deserve.

We Are All Just People, a nonprofit organization established in 2011 by two undergraduate students in Davenport, Iowa, is an organization dedicated to improving charitable giving during the holidays through bringing it to a personal, human level. According to Founder and Director of the Quad Cities base Abigail Rose, "It’s not about raising money, but about human beings in need of our help."

We Are All Just People is one of the rare organizations that allocates 100% of its donations to families in need, believing that no child should have to walk to school cold or think Santa forgot them because their family is down on their luck this year. We Are All Just People has expanded from the Quad Cities (Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa; and Moline and East Moline, Illinois), and now has a new base in Baltimore, Maryland, as well.

How does the organization function? We Are All Just People saw great success in their first holiday season, looking to churches and other organizations that have been contacted by families in need and soliciting donations and special offers from department and other retail stores. We Are All Just People - Volunteer Global

We Are All Just People provides customized care packages for families, based on their personal needs and requests from the families themselves, including a variety of items from winter coats and boots to cookware to toys and games. Items are wrapped and hand delivered to the families, providing the level of compassion that many of us need during this time of year. "It’s about people helping people, face to face, hand to hand, heart to heart,“ says Katherine Hart, Founder and Director of the organization’s Baltimore base.

This holiday season marks the one-year anniversary of the organization, which raised over $6,000 last year for families in the Quad Cities area. With the holiday season fast approaching, We Are All Just People is looking for donations of all kind—whether they are cash, gift, or food, for families in the Quad Cities and Baltimore communities.
