CRACYP Progreso Verde

Introduction

CRACYP (which stands for Rural Forestation and Progress Network Corporation, in Spanish) is a non profit organisation facilitating reforestation and sustainable rural development in an agricultural area of extreme poverty including over 200 communities in the foothills of the Western Andes in Ecuador. Our mission is "Progreso Verde" or "Green Progress".

Types of Projects

Sustainable rural development Volunteers might help with organic agriculture, developing ecotourism, teaching or training about health & safety, quality control, marketing, fair trade, etc. We also need engineering students/graduates to evaluate local roads and design repairs.

Locations

Rural Ecuador, in the beautiful sub-tropical foothills of the Western Andes, mostly in small sugarcane farming communities.

Timeline

Volunteers: 1 to 8 weeks Interns: 4 to 12 weeks

Accommodations

A house in a beautiful little agricultural village in the rolling "sugarcane hills" of Bolivar Province in Ecuador. The house is shared with other volunteers and interns, and the fulltime volunteer coordinator. The friendly cook/cleaner works 6 days a week to prepare local food for volunteers.

Prerequisites

Volunteers: Minimum age 18. Practical approach, adaptability, can-do attitude. Spanish useful but not essential. Must be reasonably fit. Interns: must be studying, have studied or be accepted on course to study relevant subject (development, ecotourism, engineering, organic agriculture or similar). Minimum age 18. Basic Spanish language skills. Must be reasonably fit.

Costs

The contribution required depends on how long volunteers or interns stay, but approx: Volunteers: $165/week Interns: $175/week The contribution covers food, housing and the services of a fulltime volunteer coordinator as well as materials, local staff, etc. Interns also participate in a monthly development workshop and run their own mini-project, supervised by the volunteer coordinator.
