Introduction

Fundación Mahatma Gandhi (FMG) is an emerging community organization of recent formation that seeks to better the quality of life of people in Las Terrenas, through service and development in education, health, technical and professional formation, the environment and the arts.

Locations

Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, on the northeastern part of the island. It´s about 2.5 hrs from the capital, and 2.5 hrs. from the closest largest airport (SDQ). We work mostly in the center of town (about 25,000) and mostly with kids 5-18, though we have many adults participants and library users. Depending on the volunteer´s skills, we select and recruit the audience for special projects.

Timeline

Admission dates: early September (September to December), early January (January to April), early May (May through July), we are close in August. Volunteers may come for 2 weeks minimum, unlimited length of stays are possible. Regular programs are 10-12 weeks for each period. We´ve discovered that the greatest benefit is found among those that stay at least 3 months.

Accommodations

Casa Paz is a volunteer housing facility that can hold up to 7-8 volunteers at only $7/day. It includes bed, mosquito net, linen, fully-equipped kitchen, electricity and drinking water within walking distance from Biblioteca Anacaona, our main center. It´s mostly a house for female volunteers, but depending on circunstances it could be used for mixed housing. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.

Prerequisites

Ours is a partnership for peace and justice. Volunteers come because they want to be do good work and are committed, self-starters, "free-agents" who already agree with what we attempt to do and want to support our efforts. We do not have the staff or resources to provide constant supervision or traditional program management. A commitment to culturally respectful service is essential.

Costs

$250 fee for all volunteers regardless of length of stay. $150 for return volunteers. Housing, transport, meals are extra. Depending on life style meals can go from $5-20/day. No local expenses for local transport if you walk to the library. Airline expenses depend on your point of origin and available rates. Best to have your own medical insurance.
