Introduction
Gap Year South Africa harnesses the power of volunteerism and aims to connect the developed world with the developing world. We believe in the power and importance of committing time and energy into a developmental project. Our on the ground organisation in South Africa has an extensive network of contacts and intimate knowledge of local conditions, which allows us to organise the best possible South African Gap Year projects.
Gap Year South Africa works extremely closely with under-resourced local South African communities. At the core of Gap Year South Africa’s DNA are our community development projects. This is our primary objective as an organisation and we want to welcome volunteers that are motivated to make a difference and serve others that have been afforded very little opportunity in life. Our South African Gap Year projects contribute to social and economic development and address priority areas such as education, health, moral regeneration and social cohesion
Gap Year South Africa always endeavours to ensure that our volunteers have a safe time while in South Africa, make a meaningful contribution to a hugely under resourced community, have loads of fun, experience Africa and in particular Cape Town and all of its attractions as well as learn a great deal about themselves and gain valuable life lessons and experiences.
Gap Year South Africa Approach
Our approach is one of co-investment and community involvement, where local communities and local organisations are also encouraged to commit time, energy and basic resources to the projects. Gap Year South Africa projects are ‘owned’ by local communities and local organisations and a stringent operational code of conduct is always adhered too. This encourages a two-way commitment and investment both from the local community and local organisation as well as the volunteer.
Our model avoids creating a mindset of dependency but rather builds self sustainability within under-resourced communities. The intended beneficiaries of our projects are people who have inherently been afforded very little exceptional opportunity. Working with local communities, we aim to empower underprivileged people with the essential life skills to become future values-based leaders of development in their own communities.

Gap Year South Africa offers volunteer projects in Cape Town.
Volunteer in Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The impressive presence of the world renowned Table Mountain stands proudly above the city of Cape Town. Beautiful white sandy beaches along a peaceful coastline frame the Cape Peninsula, which is famed for its unique floral kingdom, bountiful rivers, vleis and dams and magnificent countryside. The surrounding area extends far into the winelands, green in summer and red-gold in autumn. Cape Town is a city of culture, built on a history that reflects in the architecture, cuisine, music and dance.
You are hosted by the Team of Gap Year South Africa in our comfortable fully furnished house along with all our volunteers. The volunteer house is a very safe and friendly environment within Fish Hoek, a coastal village lying in a valley at the mouth of the Silvermine River, on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula. Together with a warm summer and temperate winter climate and a friendly community, Cape Town is an ideal Gap Year destination throughout the year. Accommodations
Accommodation, Food and Transport
Gap Year South Africa volunteers stay in dormitory style accommodation with communal bathrooms. The house facilities include television and DVD player, broadband internet access and a swimming pool. The house is located a short distance from the beach and conveniently situated within walking distance to a wide range of amenities for all your additional needs.
During the week, Mondays to Fridays, volunteers have all their meals prepared for them by our local team. Meals are not included on Saturdays and Sundays, as experience has taught us that most volunteers tend to explore the multitude of attractions Cape Town has to offer during weekends. Volunteers either purchase and prepare their own meals on weekends or often choose to eat out at local restaurants. Our kitchen is superbly equipped and local supermarkets and restaurants are within walking distance from the volunteer house.
On arrival at Cape Town Airport you will be welcomed by our Gap Year South Africa Team and be transferred from the airport to the volunteer house. All daily transport to and from the projects is provided.
You can view some accommodation pictures and a video tour of the house at http://gapyearsouthafrica.com/south-africa/accommodation/
