Maasai International Challenge Africa

Introduction

Maasai International Challenge Africa, a non-profit based in Tanzania, places volunteers and interns in schools, hospital, and orphanages in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  You can even sign up for an adventure safari or teach English to school students.

MICATZ facilitates opportunities for individuals, students, groups and gap-year students.   Adventure holidays, wildlife programs, language and cultural experience programs such as Swahili Language Study Abroad are just a few examples of the varied programs available.

Each year we place over 500 people into our programs in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana, India, Nepal, Philippines, Malawi, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Peru – Cusco, Peru – Lima and Thailand.

Timeline

Dates and Duration: Flexible dates and durations of stay. Available throughout year, from 4 weeks-3 months+. You pick your start and finish dates.

Program is opened to volunteers all year round. Volunteers can spend from two weeks to six months on the program. A night in the capital upon arrival (sometimes due to problems like your luggage being left behind by the airline, staying in Arusha may be go beyond a day), orientation by Focus in Africa to offer volunteers education on the culture, traditions and sensitivities of the people in the community of work, basic local language syllabus and how to go about things in the community in terms of food, water, socialization, etc. The pre-departure information will be enough an orientation for participants who intend to spend a month or less on a placement

Accommodations

The volunteer house is a large one, Western-style house with 10- bedrooms (all shared accommodations with bunk beds). Bathrooms in each apartment with Western-style toilets and hot water for showers. The house is safe and secure, with a security guard and a large gate. In the volunteer house, there is a cook who cooks the meals for the volunteers.

For the home stays, we give that family money from your fee for support, food and board. It is exciting to stay with a family; that way you will learn the Tanzanian way of life, meet local people, eat local food and engage in local customs and traditions. Living is basic but all the home stays have electricity and running water and accommodate volunteers in SAFE and SECURE homes (some rural home stays may not have electricity or running water during times of drought). All home stays have been inspected thoroughly by our own local Tanzania staff and chosen because of their safety and security. Do not worry about staying in a home stay—we would not place you somewhere that is unsafe because it will give us a bad reputation.
