Introduction
ReefDoctor is a small UK based, not-for-profit, Marine Conservation organisation conducting coral reef research, implementing sustainable management principles, community awareness, schools education and social development work with the local Vezo fishing communities of the coral reef system of the Bay of Ranobe SW Madagascar part of the 3rd largest coral reef system in the world.
Types of Projects
Scuba & snorkel based survey's and research on the coral reefs
Land based research and monitoring of mangroves, seagrasses and coastal fisheries
Educate the children and local communities on the marine environment
Help communities implement sustainable fishing practices
Help our social development and family planning projects
Locations
Ifaty village Bay of Ranobe Toliara province SW Madagascar
Timeline
4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks. Expeditions start monthly between February to December
Accommodations
1, 2 and 6 person Malagasy style reed/wood huts available for volunteers (and staff). All hut on the beach front with cement flour, lockable doors and windows. Each volunteer is provided single bed, bedside table, cloth rack, bed materials, mosquito net.
Prerequisites
Age18-60 fit & healthy (passing a standard recreational scuba diving medical supplied). No prior experience or qualifications needed just general enthusiasm to undertake hands on conservation in simple conditions in a tropical environment.
Costs
Programs range from 14000 GBP for 4 weeks to 2,600 GPB up to full 12 weeks with Free PADI dive certification open water to Rescue diver. Discounts also available
