Introduction

We are a non-profit biological research and education center formed by community members ("citizen scientists") and Costa Rican scientists to create a culture of environmental conservation in Costa Rica.Reserva Playa Tortuga works with the local communities, national and international governmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals to promote environmental awareness and conservation.

Types of Projects

Sea Turtle Research/Conservation- monitoring,data collection,protection from poachers. Mangrove Studies and Reforestation. Water Quality Studies. Sustainable Fishing. Community Conservation Education. Mapping and GIS studies.Flora and Fauna Inventories.

Locations

Costa Rica: Reserva Playa Tortuga is located 3.5 hours from San Jose, in Ojochal de Osa on the Southern Pacific Coast Of Costa Rica. The Reserva offers a unique environment to reseachers and volunteers. It is situated at the mouth of the Terraba river which is a part of The Terraba Sierpe national wetlands a RAMSAR site and just outside of Marino Ballena National Park.

Accommodations

Please see ou website for photos. We have a modern brand new volunteer facility. We have both solar and eletric. Hot and cold water at all times. All rooms have fans,window,locking doors, and new mattresses. Our drinking water is purified. We have large dining and conference facilities. Free WIFI internet. Prerequisites

You must be 18 years or older or 13 and accompanied by a parent/guardian. There is a minimum of one week volunteer time. Spanish is not necessary. Field professionals always welcome, we are always accepting research proposals but to volunteer all you need is to be reasonably physically fit and have an interest in conservation, the environment and wildlife.

Costs

Costs include: room and 3 meals a day, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. We have additional activities available such as photography lessons,surf lessons, and horseback riding for an additional cost. There are local shops and restaurants within walking distance. 1 week - $350 /Turtle Season $390 2 weeks - $675/TS $755 3 week - $1000/ TS $1100 $250 for each adt'l week.
