Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society

Project Description

The Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society was one of the first organizations to develop an integrated community-based approach to human-elephant conflict (HEC) resolution, poverty alleviation and elephant conservation in Sri Lanka.  The SLWCS model is an inclusive strategy that gives consideration to environmental protection, integrated or holistic development that is sustainable, poverty alleviation, social mobilization, decentralization, bottom-up planning, mainstreaming gender, improving governance and basically sustaining more with community resources.  This innovative program was launched in 1997 under the Society’s landmark and internationally acclaimed and award winning, SAVING ELEPHANTS BY HELPING PEOPLE (SEHP) PROJECT.  After 16 years the SEHP strategy is one of the most successful participatory efforts to resolve HEC in Sri Lanka.  Today the SEHP project and its concepts directly benefits ~165,000 villagers in 3 Administrative Provinces of Sri Lanka.  In acknowledgment and appreciation of these efforts, in 2008 the SLWCS received a UNDP Equator Initiative Prize, which honors community-based projects that represent outstanding efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

The human elephant conflict resolution programs of the SLWCS utilizes a phased approach that also includes long term monitoring, evaluation and re-strategizing to ensure maximum benefits to people and elephants.  The SLWCS HEC resolution management efforts are implemented to safeguard both elephants and people.  The efforts begins with a bottom to top process of discussions with affected communities and field research to design and develop the most effective HEC mitigation management solution through a participatory process that includes long term monitoring and evaluation.
